Whether you’re looking for a new phone, a washing machine or a loan, it pays to shop around. If you’re considering finance, it makes perfect sense to compare different lenders.

Differences between Wonga and Satsuma

There are lots of differences between Satsuma and Wonga. Here are just four of those differences:

  • Fees – Satsuma doesn’t charge late repayment fees, but Wonga does
  • Flexibility – Satsuma gives you up to 12 months to repay; Wonga gives you half that amount of time
  • Credit checks – Satsuma has SmartCheck, which lets you see if you’ll be accepted before you apply*
  • Types of loans – Wonga started as a payday lender and still offer this service today. Satsuma doesn’t offer this type of finance; we offer slightly longer loans

Fees

One of the big differences between Satsuma and Wonga loans is Wonga charge fees. You have to pay an additional £15 every time you miss a repayment. They also continue to charge interest on outstanding amounts, which can rapidly increase the amount you owe.

We never charge you extra fees. Even if you miss a payment. The amount you agree upfront is the only amount we ask you to repay. We’ll never add on additional fees. If you find yourself struggling, all we ask is that you contact our UK call centre and we’ll do our best to support you.

Flexibility

As a new Satsuma customer, you can borrow up to £1,000 (subject to affordability). You can choose to repay your loan over three to twelve months. This allows you to spread your repayments over a period up to a year which can mean your instalments are smaller and more manageable. Wonga doesn't give you these options.

Wonga's loans are smaller in value and much more short term. They offer three different loans.

A Wonga short term loan allows you to borrow up to £400, but you only have 1 to 35 days to repay it in full.

Wonga also offers a three or six month Flexi Loan. Again, the maximum you can borrow is much less than Satsuma - up to £600 in this case. You can choose to take either three or six months to repay the loan. Remember, Satsuma allows you up to one year to repay your loan.

Satsuma also gives you the option of repaying your loan in either weekly or monthly instalments. This is something Wonga doesn't offer. Sometimes it’s easier to repay weekly, especially if you get paid weekly. Many customers opt to pay monthly, but the option’s there if you need it.

Credit checks

When you apply for a Wonga loan, they’ll carry out a credit check. All lenders do this. The credit check determines whether or not Wonga approves your application.

We’ll also do a credit check, but not  always straight away. We’ve got an online tool that lets you find out if you’ll be approved for a Satsuma loan before you apply without affecting your credit rating. We call it SmartCheck.

Find out before you apply with SmartCheck

If you’re worried about whether or not you'll be accepted and the impact on your credit rating, there's no need to be. Before you apply for a Satsuma loan, you can use SmartCheck. The tool will tell you in sixty seconds if you’re eligible for a loan. It’ll also tell you how much you can borrow. SmartCheck does all this without performing a hard credit search, so there’s no impact on your credit rating unless you choose to apply*.

There’s no more uncertainty about whether you’re eligible for a Satsuma loan. Simply use SmartCheck. Wonga, on the other hand, do not offer a comparable service.
