The UK is a great place to live, but when it comes to the weather we aren’t so blessed with sunny skies and warm temperatures. This leaves many looking forward to holidays abroad to escape the wind and rain, with our research showing over half of holidaymakers budgeting for their next holiday over 12 months. Here at Satsuma, we wanted to know more about the unexpected expenses you can encounter when taking a trip, so in January 2017 surveyed 2000 UK holidaymakers to find out where they got caught out and how much it cost them.

Our research shows that holidays’ are not cheap, with an average budget of £713 per person for the holiday itself and an additional £460 to spend while away.

The stats that could save you money: how avoidable holiday costs can soon add up

But how can you get savvy to avoid any unexpected expenses?

When looking for your holiday, it’s really important to take the time to do your research and understand what is included and to budget for what’s not. Our research found that 1 in 4 Brits have been charged for using Wi-Fi whilst abroad, something to be aware of in order to avoid this extra unexpected cost. We also found that 43% of Brits have been hit by additional tourist taxes that they weren’t aware of prior to arriving at their destination so always do your research.

Unexpected fees can hit before you even arrive at your destination - remember what’s included in your flights and the luggage limits. It was found that 1 in 5 Brits didn’t check the small print or the scales and were therefore charged for extra luggage.

Once the holiday is booked, the next thing on the list is organising your insurance to make sure you’re covered in case anything goes wrong, but do you know enough about insurance to make sure you’re getting the right policy for you? If you want to know more about insurance, read here.

Our research also showed that 32% of holidaymakers are victims of flight delays, so make sure you prepare by having an activity packed in your bag such as a book, music or game to save you spending in the shops. Also, be aware that you maybe be entitled to claim travel compensation if you’re delayed over 3 hours.

Hidden costs and tourist scams are truly something that can effect everybody, even the most seasoned traveller. How travel savvy are you? We have created the following tool that gives tips and advice on how to avoid those holiday rip offs:
